Vatican Says Mideast Christians Endangered By Israeli-Arab Conflict, "Political Islam"
International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, 7 Jun 2010
The international community is ignoring the struggles for Middle East Christians and thousands are fleeing the region due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the war in Iraq, and Lebanon’s political instability, the Vatican said on Sunday.
A 46-page working paper released during Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Cyprus in preparation for an October conference in Rome for Middle East bishops, also stated Christians are threatened by the "extremist current" let loose by "political Islam."
During Sunday Mass in Cyprus, Benedict said he is praying the October summit will direct the world’s attention "on the plight of those Christians in the Middle East who suffer for their beliefs."
Cyprus is a mostly Greek Orthodox Mediterranean island and the Vatican considers it a link between Europe and the Middle East. Half the island, however, is occupied by Muslim Turkey.
