Experts in computer science, Biblical studies and Jewish halachic law came together last week at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv to try to determine if it’s possible to scientifically reconstruct the origins of the biblical text and any legal implications that might follow.
The organizers of the gathering asked a renowned computer science professor if the principle of correcting cycles can be applied to the biblical text in order to reconstruct any scribal errors that may have occurred during copying of Torah scrolls in past generations.
"This is a fascinating and important project waiting to be undertaken," Rabbi Shabtai Rappaport of Bar-Ilan’s Institute for Advanced Torah Studies told The Jerusalem Post.
"Now that the theoretical infrastructure to attempt to reconstruct the original text exists, the ways to apply it in order to achieve such an end will be examined."
