Iran Signs Oil-For-Uranium Deal With Zimbabwe

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad paid a visit to close ally Zimbabwe over the weekend just as reports surfaced that Tehran has struck a secret deal with the despotic regime of Robert Mugabe to supply it with oil in exchange for exclusive rights to the African nation’s untapped uranium reserves for use in its renegade nuclear program.

At a lavish official dinner in his honor on Thursday, Ahmadinejad blasted what he termed "expansionist countries" for exerting "satanic pressures on the people of Zimbabwe." Then on Saturday, he also vented his frustration with the United Nations, denouncing sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program as illegal and accusing countries who suspect Iran of pursuing atomic weapons of "lying."

"We do not submit, and we do not accept any kind of pressures. And we do not follow the illegal decisions," said Ahmadinejad. "We think by issuing resolutions against us, Mr. Obama will suffer more."

Ahmadinejad was on a tour of several African states in an apparent bid to buy allies and stave off Western sanctions. The reported deal to supply Tehran with raw uranium is likely to put Zimbabwe in breach of current UN sanctions on Iran.

In related news, The Washington Post reported on Monday that increasing numbers of young Iranian scientists are disillusioned with their government and are seeking ways to defect to the United States, bringing much intelligence about Iran’s renegade nuclear program with them and forcing intelligence agencies to constantly make revisions to the new National Intelligence Estimate on Iran’s nuclear program, now tentatively scheduled to be released in August.

"There is a wealth of information-sharing going on, and it reflects enormous discontent among Iranian technocrats; the morale is very low," said a former US government official. The "brain drain" program in which the CIA attempts to lure Iranian scientists into defecting is part of a broad clandestine program which also includes sabotaging nuclear equipment bound for Iran.

Meanwhile neighboring Saudi Arabia announced last week that it will build the King Abdullah City for Nuclear and Renewable Energy near the capital of Riyadh. Although the official reason given for the ambitious industrial project was to diversify the local economy, support education and establish Saudi Arabia as a leader in green technology, most analysts believe it is an attempt by Saudi Arabia to match Iran’s nuclear threat.
